Well I got to come home after all. I was so busy and the night flew by. I gave blood and had a very critical patient. I was ready to come home.
Sometimes I feel like we are the forgotten shift at night. Turns out the rest of the staff got their turkey coupons earlier in the week. In time for Thanksgiving. We have yet to receive them on the night shift. At Christmas the goodies are delivered on the day shift and we get empty trays with crumbs on my shift.
Changes and new policies, orientation about new equipment, bake sells and drawings, all during the day shift. But where would they be if no one wanted to work the night shift?
Patients don't remember us as anything but the nurse who kept him awake all night but most patients crump on the night shift and we quietly and efficiently save his or her live. Family comes the next day and the patients tell them how they didn't get to sleep all night.
But I don't do this job for the goodies, like full bedpans, LOL. I don't need the treats, and I don't need the turkey. Just an occasional Thanks would be nice.
So to all the night shift workers all over the world I want to say Thanks. Your important. I care. I get my milk, bread, food and just about everything else because some people work nights. It shortens our life spans, is hard on your family life and wreaks havoc on your sleep pattern. But it is an important job. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
