Discrimination is alive and well

One thing I really noticed about this race and election is the fact that woman are still really discriminated against. I think anyone but a woman could be voted into office. They have done nothing but ridicule Sarah Palin, a smart no nonsense woman and they gave Hiliary hell from day one. And about what, the clothes they wear, the hair, the shoes, what perfume! I think even a gnome would stand a better chance of being elected.

Even now on the news every day and in the paper they are making fun of Sarah Palin. They aren't making fun of any of the males who ran and lost. Women still make less then men, they still get promoted less, they still hold fewer positions of power, not that I think that would be any fun.

Personally I think a woman might do a great job. Not just because she is a woman, because I don't think you should vote for anybody just because of their gender or race but because she would be just as good as anyone else. And the people I hear that are being the witchiest about the female politicians are the females. What ever happened to standing up for equal opportunities? So come on ladies, lets stick up for our own kind. Not that men don't hold a special place in our hearts, :)

I guess it will be the last barrier broken, if it ever is.

Have you seen the puppy cam? So cute.

Well, off to bed. I will read awhile and hopefully sleep well.

Food Friday

Here's a recipe for Food Friday at Linda's World. Almost late again.

Pumpkin Pie Quesadillas

1-16 oz. can pumpkin
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
8-6 inch flour tortillas
1-8 oz. package light cream cheese, softened Cool Whip

Combine pumpkin, sugar, and spice; set aside Spread cream cheese in an
equal amount on each flour tortilla to within a half inch of edge. Do
the same with the pumpkin mixture untill all are made.
Heat griddle to a medium heat and spray the griddle with vegetable
spray. Place each tortilla filling-side up onto griddle for 1 to 2
minutes and quickly fold in half. Place on a platter and cover to keep
warm. Repeat until all are cooked and folded. Cut each folded tortilla
in halves or thirds.
Top with Cool Whip. Serves 6 to 8

Party time

My aunt sent me all these adorable baby pictures. Check out the one below, don't you just want to pinch those cute cheeks. I just love babies.

I didn't take my ACLS after all. There was a mix up and I didn't get added to the class. So now I wait til next month. Thats OK with me. I didn't feel like sitting in a class all day.

We have to do this class every 2 years which means I have done it like 13 times. They change it slightly each time, but actually the type they teach we just don't do much in a hospital setting. I have a nice person who comes to the codes and puts a tube in the airway. Lab comes and draws all my lab. A resp. therapist comes and bags the patient. Someone gives the meds and it is rarely me though I do know what they all are and what they are for. The most I usually do is start the CPR and do the recording. I take CPR every 2 years also. So another month won't matter.

Tonight we are going to watch a friend of ours comedy act. He has been on comedy central and is pretty funny. They are charging food for the food bank plus a small fee so it is affordable and for a good cause. My only concern is my lack of sleep. I was up at 4:30 and sure would rather go to bed then out......but I promised. I did warn him though that if I am made part of his act in any way, well heads will roll.

I am now seriously starting to think about Christmas. When you have to mail things out you should get started early. Seeing my grandchildren so seldom though I have no idea what they would really like and what they already have. If they were older I would send money but they are young enough that doesn't cut it. Sigh. If they were closer it would be easier because I would be hearing daily what they want for Christmas. A challenge.

Well, other then that not much going on. I am reading a couple of good books and wishing the weather was less wet. I want to get out with my camera. Harold's is going to be giving some classes with the Canon reps either this weekend or next and I would love to go. And I got my winter coat back from being altered at the seamstress. They did a good job and it is as good as new again.

Piggy kisses, aren't they grand!

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Sometimes I feel like I am watching a horror movie, you know the monster is behind the door and you want to yell.......don't open the door, the monster is there and no one is listening....thinking it is all movie.....but it is life.

Gmail

Ok, I tried to add the new gmail link to my profile but I can't get it to go through. Could someone please try and see if you can get it to work. Thanks.

I have been hearing though the grapevine that AOL might be closing their doors. In which case I am happy they gave us time to move our journals while under the stress of maybe losing their jobs. I dont' know if it is true or not but just in case I got a new email address. Please let me know if you want it. I sent it to alot but it would be so much easier adding you all to my new address book if you emailed me then to copy and paste them all.

Work went by in a blink last night. As predicted the cooler weather has us filled up with heart and lung patients. Staffing was good so the night went well. I had to do charge but besides the 3 admits it wasn't a bad night and everyone was on their toes. Patients included, LOL.

I have one man newly diagnosed with Parkinson's. With that disease gait is sometimes one of the first clues and this man literally walks on his tip toes with a forward lean. Makes him have a tendency to introduce his forehead to the floor so they started him on some medication that hopefully will clear that our. He was very good about calling us when he wanted up thank goodness. Every once in awhile I will a patient who tells me, I didn't want to bother you. Say what! Bother me, its my job. I would much rather walk with you and help you then have you hurt yourself by falling. So everyone. Trust me. It's no bother. I am happy to help.

Could you imagine what the night would be like it no one called out? 12.5 hours of shear boredom.

Most of the snow is gone. Good riddance I say. Actually I do like it in moderation. One more night of work. I don't have to be charge, a good thing. And I am feeling better, a real good thing.

Well, time to prepare the meal. Sigh, now why is that.

Book recomendation

The Forgotten Man, by Amity Shlaes

I read another of her books that was very interesting called The Greedy Hand. I read a lot of books. I like history and non-fiction, but will read almost anything. This is a great book about the last depression which I thought might come in handy and its a good book also. I read another of her books that was very interesting called The Greedy Hand. It explains a lot of things I didn't understand. One reviewer wrote:

"Economic ignorance among policymakers was much worse than I had realized. I was steeped in the myth that the reason the Depression was so bad was that only Keynes had the answer, and he had to overcome the resistance of "the classical economists," such as Irving Fisher. But the differences between Fisher and Keynes seem small when compared to the differences between the policymakers and both economists. In physics, it would be like watching an academic debate over the meaning of quantum mechanics while policymakers are unable to grasp the simple concept of gravity".

I love it. I guess I always feel better about something if I can understand it some way. Not great....but better. Anyway its good reading.

I work the next 2 nights. I still am not feeling well and if by Thursday I am not feeling better I will have to see my doctor. These things seem to hang on so long. I hate being sick. My pink eye is all better though.

Friday I take my ACLS again. Advanced Cardiac Life Support. So that is a 8 hour class on my day off. I am sure they will call me this weekend also. And I might actually start working extra. I think I will need to start saving up some money. Christmas is coming and my grandchildren live a long way away. Although we are cutting back on gifts here I want to send them gifts. Its so hard long distance.

Well, the snow is melting and it is raining. That means ice later and hopefully no more accidents. The snow was wet and heavy so it always can mean heart attacks if your not careful. We are usually busy this time of year. I hope everyone out there uses a snowblower or hires a kid to shovel their snow. Except around here I never see kids out asking to shovel your walks. My brothers would hit the houses the second it snowed to make pocket money. When did that end?

In 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month, the world rejoiced and celebrated. After four years of bitter war, an armistice was signed. The "war to end all wars" was over.

November 11, 1919 was set aside as Armistice Day in the United States, to remember the sacrifices that men and women made during World War I in order to ensure a lasting peace. On Armistice Day, soldiers who survived the war marched in a parade through their home towns. Politicians and veteran officers gave speeches and held ceremonies of thanks for the peace they had won.

Congress voted Armistice Day a federal holiday in 1938, 20 years after the war ended. But Americans realized that the previous war would not be the last one. World War II began the following year and nations great and small again participated in a bloody struggle. After the Second World War, Armistice Day continued to be observed on November 11.

In 1953 townspeople in Emporia, Kansas called the holiday Veterans' Day in gratitude to the veterans in their town. Soon after, Congress passed a bill introduced by a Kansas congressman renaming the federal holiday to Veterans' Day. 1971 President Nixon declared it a federal holiday on the second Monday in November.

Americans still give thanks for peace on Veterans' Day. There are ceremonies and speeches and at 11:00 in the morning, most Americans observe a moment of silence, remembering those who fought for peace.

After the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War, the emphasis on holiday activities has shifted. There are fewer military parades and ceremonies. Veterans gather at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. to place gifts and stand quiet vigil at the names of their friends and relatives who fell in the Vietnam War. Families who have lost sons and daughters in wars turn their thoughts more toward peace and the avoidance of future wars.

Veterans of military service have organized support groups such as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. On Veterans' Day and Memorial Day, these groups raise funds for their charitable activities by selling paper poppies made by disabled veterans. This bright red wildflower became a symbol of World War I after a bloody battle in a field of poppies called Flanders Field in Belgium.

Soup for cold days

Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community. The
Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications
from repeated pokes in t
he belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned
out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the
California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch.
The grave site was piled high with flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who
never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but
his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart
cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little
flaky at times, he still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive
roll model for millions.

Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, three children: John Dough, Jane
Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by
his elderly father, Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

The weather has been cold and I have been ill so my thoughts turn to soups. This one I got out of the healthy cooking magazine and is very good. The recipe makes quite a bit, 13 cups so you can either make the full amount and freeze or cut the recipe in half.

Southwest Bean Soup

1 large onion, chopped
1 medium green pepper, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minces
3 cans (14 -1/2 ounce each) reduced-sodium beef broth
2 cans (15 ounce each) black beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
2 cans (4 ounces each) chopped green chilies
1 cup frozen corn
1 - 1/2 tsp chili powder
1 tsp ground cumin
1/2 c fresh cilantro

In a large nonstick pan coated with cooking spray, cook and stir the onion, green pepper and garlic over medium heat until almost tender.

Stir in the broth, beans, tomatoes, chilies, corn, chili powder and cumin. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir in cilantro

1 cup = 95 calories, trace fat, 2mg cholesterol, 459 mg sodium, 18 g carbs. 5 gm protein

This is only 1 point for WW.

A little grated low fat cheddar is good on top and it warms you to your toes.

Well, my pink eye was the precursor to some type of viral infection. I have been ill for the last 2 days and ended up with the pink eye in both eyes. Saturday I spent sleeping and having nightmares. In one of them my bed was breathing. It was like I was awake, simply horrifying. I felt like I was awake and lay there feeling and hearing my bed breathing. Another one I tried to wake up. I felt like I was awake but couldn't open my eyes or get my body to respond. I could feel and hear someone laying next to me breathing, but couldn't open my eyes to see who it was. I could hear Rick in the kitchen and knew it wasn't him. Finally I was able to open my eyes and get out of bed. I could feel the person next to me get up also but when I turned to look there was no one there. Then minutes later I really woke up and was still in bed. I could have sworn I was awake and had gotten up. Another time I heard something outside my window knocking. I went out in my PJ's and slippers in the cold and looked. Nothing there. I was glad no one drove by as I was not looking my best. I went back inside and back to bed. My entire body hurt and I was having chest pain off and on. My mouth tasted terrible. What a icky feeling. Yesterday I still felt bad but not that sick.

Obviously I must have had some weird type of virus, but fortunately am feeling better today. Just worn out and tired. Definitely did not get any restful sleep.

Today I am just going to try and completely recover and do light house work. I still have a killer headache. Hopefully our weather is going to warm up a little.
