The Vulgarity of Speech these days

I remember a fews ago we were out eating dinner.    At the other table was a young woman with her co-workers.    She was very pretty,  wore a nice business type suit,  her make-up was well done and every hair in place.   She looked classy.   Then she opened her mouth.   And a drunken sailor popped out.

Every other work was F this and F that.   She was loud and crass.   All of a sudden instead of a classy business woman she started looking like a back room hooker.   I wondered why the language.   She obviously had gone to great length to try and look good.   Showered, brushed her teeth, clean clothes.    Why not clean up the language.    Which I feel is a beautiful thing and done properly a joy to read and listen to.   Just read Indigo's blog to see how beautiful language can be.   Why in the world would you want peoples image of you to be that image.

Again the other night we ate out at a nice restaurant.    A table of young people,  to me they looked like children but they were in their early 20's.   They worked for a local TV station here.   I assume they must have some education under their belts.   One of the guys was loudly comparing his assets to every F'ing person he worked for.   His boss was a f'ing moron with no f'ing computer skills, and a f'ing fat a%$.   And the a%% hole F&& in production had no F'ing idea how to do their job.  They had no F'ng lanquage skills, and couldn't fng write fng copy if their fng life depended on it.   He is the only fng one of them who knows what the f is going on and he deserved his job because he was such a fng better interviewer the any fng one of them.

I really wish I had been the boss they were talking about loudly in this very public and classy restaurant.   I would have quietly and with class and good language skills informed the group that he was fired on the spot.

Now I suppose to some people I seem old fashioned and prudish.   Maybe it's true.   I miss a less vulgar time when no one would talk trash especially in public with women and children around.   But actually I don't like the entire way things seem to be going.   More and more kids graduating from school who can't read and have no language skills.  What do they learn in school?   How to be green and what their sign is.   Manners do matter.   I am always reminding my young staff when I am charge not to swear at work.   It lowers you in many of my patients,  who are even older then myself and is offensive.

Do I swear,  Yes.  Rarely but I do.  Smash my finger with a hammer and I can belt out a few.   Find out a friend passed away and I can utter a swear word.   It seems appropriate occasionally.    But every other word!    Unless you respect yourself how can you expect others to respect you.   And some of that is how you portray yourself to others.   A really classy person doesn't need gutter talk.   They just need language.

So that's my rant for today.   I just hate watching us go backwards and not forwards.  From the beautiful language and writing of our ancestors to the trash talking of today.  We are going backward for sure.

I TOTALLY agree with you. How sad that these young people lack the vocabulary to express themselves without using vulgar language. The "F" word just really stands out as vulgar. And I have heard some young people use it in front of their own mothers. I guess that says it all. So, why don't you call the station manager and tell him how badly that reflected on the employees and the station. I'm sure he will tell you the station is not responsible for employees actions off site. But, the "F-ing" boss they were talking about might get the word... and they might feel some repercussions for potty-mouth.

I believe, were I you, I would call that TV station and proceed to tell the PR person, or the manager, exactly what went on at that restaurant, complete with descriptions of the folks, if you don't have their names.
I feel the same way about vulgar language...it's very disrespectful.

Here in the south, we don't get that a lot. A few years ago, some yankees were in for a championship ballgame, and we all ended up at a local restaurant at the same time...my parents and sisters and our husbands. The yankees were at the next table cutting loose with the F bomb among other things. My dad excused himself, marched over over to that table, and asked them to watch their language, that his wife and daughters didn't need to be hearing such talk. He was polite, but firm.

As he walked away, they mumbled something about "that's southern hospitality for you!" but I didn't hear one more ugly word from them.

I have to give them credit...it really could have gotten ugly. It didn't.

I do so agree with this Julie, I cannot stand to hear people swearing. I find it really makes me cringe and have always put it down to peoples limited vocabulary. It must be awful to know only one adjective to use in all your conversations. My staff wouldn't dream of swearing when I'm around, they know they'd be sent to the office, I don't care if they think I'm old fashioned they need to show respect for others.I too yearn for days gone by when people had manners; seems like they're gone forever now. xx

Swearing is in a word negative - and demonstrates a very limited command of language. It is perfectly possible to express one's displeasure without reverting to effing and blinding (as they say in the UK).

Swearing is indeed vulgar Julie!
I agree with you totally!I would have had to have said something to the young person using it so close to my hearing. Like you I can use the odd expletive in frustrating circumstances. I would probably disguise it if there was someone close by to hear it ..unlike this young obnoxious young man.
Rant on my friend! You have a point!
