Aprons

The History of  'APRONS'

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few.
It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material.
But along with that, it served as a potholder for  removing hot pans from the oven.     It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..
And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folks knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.   It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.
Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons.     REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.
Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.   They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.
P.S.   I never saw my Grandmother without one of those aprons on.

I really should have an apron. I'm a very messy cook and I've ruined lots of shirts with sauce or grease. LOL

Funny you mentioned aprons. I've just got back from seeing a very old friend and she wears an apron. It's so unusual these days but made me go and buy one too!! Maybe we could have a campaign to bring them back again!! xx

I splashed fat on my top last night and told myself to buy an apron. I haven't worn one for years! I hope I can find a nice feminine one with pockets.
It's amazing how too much knowledge about what germs float around the 'place' can do to our modern mums.
Nothing like becoming immune to them the old fashioned way...take them on board with a bite of apple pie. lol
Lovely entry July.

I love this post, Julie! I was just thinking about aprons last night, LOL. I was thinking, I need to get an apron. I quickly brushed the idea out of my head, bc, I thought, I haven't actually seen a woman wear one, other than on TV, in their own home in years. Perhaps I've never seen it. Not from my mother or her mother.

But quickly the thought returned that i want to get one. I guess I'm just getting more old-fashioned in a lot of ways in the past 10 yrs. And as you know, I do what i want anyway, i'll wear one if i want one -- i was never one to let people tell me what i have to or should do, if i think something's right!

so i stood there last night, thinking, all dressed up in a real pretty blouse, i WILL get that apron after all! it is not worth ruining my pretty clothes just bc the other women aren't smart enough to wear an apron. who cares at all if i look different?

now if i just knew where to buy one of those aprons, LOL! i guess i'll have to look online...

tell krissy she can't do something or find something, and then you better stand back out of the way, bc I WILL do it, LOL.

thanks for a good read, and some support.
