Death of a Robin

For the last 3 years I have had a robin building a nest on the wreath on my porch. Although I will have no way of knowing for sure if it was the same robin I think it was. She usually lay twice during the year and for the last week had been sitting on new eggs.

The first year she was a terror. I would go out to work on my flowers and she would dive out of the nest and at my head. The entire time I was watering she would be diving at my head and screaming at me. Connected a couple of times also. Hurt.

This year she was calmer. Although the majority of the time she did fly out of the nest when I watered she didn't always. We had a truce built up.

This morning I went out to check the flowers and saw feathers and broken eggs on the porch. Lots of feathers. Somehow something got to the nest and the eggs. I suppose it could have been an owl or hawk. I don't know how the raccoon that has been hanging around could have gotten up to her.

It saddens me. I really enjoyed seeing the new babies and had come to admire her spunk. She will be missed. Will any other Robin take it over? Any of the babies that had been born there? Time will tell. But it no longer seems like such a safe place to have her nest. Maybe I will take the wreath down.

That's sad Julie. I hope you get some more nesting somewhere nearby that's a bit safer. Sorry, had to delete the last comment, too many spelling mistakes, my keyboard doesn't always respond properly! Jeannette xx

That's sad! I like to watch the hatch grow. Maybe next year.
