Memorial day

Memorial Day, a day to remember our lost loved ones and to gather with our loved ones.   I hope everyone is having a great day.

It has been a week today that I broke my wrist.   Wish I could say it is better, but it still hurts like the dickens.   I have taken care of children that break their arms and are running around like nothing happened by now.   I must not be a child anymore.   It hurts.   But tomorrow I get it rechecked to see how it is doing and am hoping it shows signs of  healing.

My job won't let me work until the cast is off.   So I will be off for awhile.  I am hoping they give me the OK to at least use the treadmill as I feel the need to keep exercising.   I feel fluffy.

We are having the family over to grill and get together.   My youngest son is coming early to help me chop stuff up.   You would think I would be used to doing everything with one arm after all the times this arm has been laid up but even holding things with my fingers hurts so I need help.   Hopefully Rick will get the lawn mowed while we get the food ready.

We have been having lots of rain around here and there is flooding all over.   One of our favorite bike paths is under water.   Course I won't be able to ride for awhile.   And the doc wants me to get tested to see why I broke so easily.   Hopefully it was just a fluke and not brittle bones.

The picture shows where my wrist broke.  It is the most common wrist fracture.  My xray looks almost exactly like this.

The weather is suppose to be nice today but very windy.   We are making kabobs and hopefully will be able to eat outside.   Yesterday I make salted nut rolls with Ricks help.   And yesterday I managed to take a shower all by myself.   That is big for me.  I can dress myself now, LOL.

I hope everyone has a great day and please take a moment to say some prayers for all the people around the world who have been affected by the natural disasters lately.   We are indeed blessed to have a home and family with us.

Stand up for the women

The mud slinging as begun and will continue until after the elections.   But they left has hit new lows.   They have slaughtered Sarah Palin because she is uber smart and won't back down.   She is a strong woman.  One women should be proud of.  One I wish I was as smart as.   They have vilified  Michelle Bachmann,  a smart as a whip woman I may vote for.   And they are calling Laura Ingraham a a slut.  Shame on you Ed Schultz.  I would not have accepted your apology.  Laura shows much more class and style then I would have shown you.

What is with people?   Why do the Jewish people vote for the left who is planning another Holocaust?  What is with the union people who vote for the left.   They use them as muscle men as they do their dirty deeds.   My mother was in the union.   To be used this way would have shamed her.  Do they even know what they are being used for or are they just doing what their union reps tells them to do.  If they think they are doing it for them they are just not paying attention.

We have a new election.  Do you still believe what you have been told?   Do you still believe they are going to pay you mortgages and make your life better?   Do you still believe they aren't moving you toward a communist country?   We are giving our country away.   They life you live is over and your children's future is grim.

This new government is corrupting our children,  they are selling are secrets,  they have sold our country.   And the window for getting it back is narrowing rapidly.

As the insult and lie on the news every single day you have to wonder what side these people are on.   As our government sides with Muslims and betrays Israel do you as Jews still think the future is safe?   Who in this country will hide you now?

Wake up American and take it back.  While there is a glimmer of hope you can.  Don't watch the news stations who have sold out.  Listen to what is really going on.

That's the breaks kiddo

Monday is our date night.   We have been doing it for years.   I look forward to all weekend when I have worked and am busy.   And we had a very busy week at work with lots of emergencies.

So we had a nice cold  beer and a great meal.    We were visiting with friends, nice and relaxed.   I decided to run downstairs at the restaurant we were at and use the ladies room.   And on the way back I ran up the stairs.    And tripped. I put my left hand out to catch my fall.  Such a klutz.    I heard and felt the bone snap and knew immediately I had broken it my wrist.   I have broken my toe, but this was much much worse.

Supporting my wrist with one hand I told Rick,  we have to leave right now.  NOW.  He could tell by the urgency in my voice I meant it and we left.   I was afraid I would burst into tears in the restaurant and make a fool of myself..   What's wrong? Rick asked.  I broke my wrist.  What?  Are you sure you didn't just sprain it?   By this time the wrist was deformed and swollen.  I showed him my wrist and he knew also.  Oh brother.

The hospital was very busy with so many emergencies we had to wait a long time.   My wrist was killing me but as a nurse I knew it wasn't literally killing me and some people were bad enough to die.  So I gritted my teeth and did my deep breathing and sucked it up.   I must have been slightly shocky because I was chilling and so cold.

So here I sit with a cast again and off work which I can't afford.   What a bummer.   I hope and pray my wrist heals fast.    Sheesh,  who would have thought tripping and catching your fall up stairs would make your wrist break.  What whimpy bones I have.  And its my bad wrist.  which was feeling so good.

So whine whine.  Once again I am laid up.

Depression meds and heart disease

I always thought it was weird that so many of our patients had a history of depression.     Being someone who can't stay depressed for long I was kind of shocked at the amount of people that had the problem.   But a recent study may show the reason so many of our cardiac patients have that listed in their history.

A study was done to check the long term effects of antidepressants on people.   To see if a placebo was  as effective as the real thing.    One of the things they found was antidepressants caused thickening of the carotid artery walls.   All the vessels actually.   And fairly quickly.   So maybe that is why it seems we have a higher then what I think is normal amount of patients on my cardiac floor with the history of depression.

Medication is wonderful when you need it.   But I also found the patients who do the best and seem to live pretty good long lives are those who avoid the doctor and avoid taking any medication.   The side effects of so many meds just seem to cause a new set of problems.  Kidney failure,  liver damage, bleeding, you name it.

I  plan on being one of those old ladies who is on no meds except for my calcium pill.  And my vit D in the winter.   Rick and I are both lucky that we don't need any medication, well except I do take my asthma med when riding a lot on my bike.   With all my surgeries I have never had to be on any long term meds.  Since I lost weight I got rid of my blood pressure meds,  yippy.  This study just shows me one more reason to try to stay off medication.   Maybe it's because I meditate I don't need to medicate.

But if you are one of those patients who is on a antidepressant this study shows you should keep regular checkup's to check your carotids and heart.  Monitoring seems to be a good thing.  Stay well all.

Beautiful Spring day

It's a beautiful Spring day out today.   I love it.  I sat outside and listened to all the birds singing.   Wrens have moved back into their old birdhouse and I have more trying to tempt mates into the other 2 I have.   For such a small bird they have a loud mouth.    The wren on the front porch is running into trouble as the Robin doesn't want the wren so close to it's nest in the wreath.   It keeps diving at it and chasing it away.   But wrens are pretty feisty little birds and it keeps coming back.

The robins have already raised one hatch of babies and are cleaning up the nest for another batch.   In the backyard I have cardinals and bluejays begging me to put some feed out and the big old turkey is strutting his stuff and begging some also.   I love sitting outside and watching all the birds.    We had Orioles, nut-thatchers, chickadees,  goldfinches, sparrows, cowbirds, thrushes, woodpeckers,  hawks,  blackbirds,  and a few I don't know the names to.

We had a baby gardersnake in my flower bed in the front last week.   So tiny and cute.   I came out to water the new grass I planted and saw it dead on the walk with it's head missing.   Oh No!   I went and showed Rick and we were bummed out about it.   Rick went out later to get rid of the body and it was gone!  What!   Then we saw a hawk going flying by with the little body in it's claws.   Such is life.   Short for some.

Zoey is better off and on.   We think she has a chronic pancreatitis going on.   Since her bad illness a few years ago she seems prone to it.   Of worry is one of her nipples is getting really big.  Since she has never had pups getting breast cancer is rare but not unheard of.   The vet wants us to keep an eye on it.  But the good news is she has lost some weight and seems happy and healthy today.  Shedding like a storm.   I brush her and get a dogs worth of hair off her and she is still shedding.

We are getting ready to go to the gym again today.   I slacked off for a week and yesterday it was hard to get back to my routine.   Personally,  as beautiful as it is outside I would love a bike ride but Rick wants to work on his arms today so the gym it is.

I finally have my dress,  shoes and jewelry ready for the wedding next month.  I might have fun after all.    They are getting married at the mall of America which I have never been too,  that may be fun.  I hate shopping though.    We have someone who will stay here to watch the dog and the guinea pig.

We are going out of town later.   With gas prices so high we don't do that much anymore.   We have cut down on everything we do actually.    But when it is so nice outside who needs to leave town.   I read about all the troubles people are having and am just happy to have a house high from any flooding and hopefully tornadoes are done for the year.

Well,  time to get ready to work out.   Why is it all the things that are good for you aren't as much fun as the things that are bad for you?

Ole and Sven were drinking buddies who worked as aircraft mechanics in Minneapolis and one day the airport was fogged in and they were stuck in the hangar with nothing to do.
Ole said, "I vish ve had somethin ta drink!"
Sven says, "Me too. Y'know, I hear you can drink dat yet fuel and get a buzz. Ya vanna try it?"
So they pour themselves a couple of glasses of high octane hooch and got completely smashed.

The phone rang. It was Sven who asks "How iss you feelin dis mornin?"
Ole says, "I feel great. How bout you?"
Sven says, "I feel great, too. Ya don't have no hangover?"
Ole says, "No dat yet fuel iss great stuff -- no hangover, nothin. Ve oughta do dis more often."
Sven agreed."Yeah, vell, but dere's yust vun ting."
Ole asked, "Vat's dat?"
Sven questioned, "Haff you farted yet?"
Ole stopped to think. "No "
"Vell, DON'T, 'cause I'm  in Iowa
