Shopping for bargains

A big part of me keeps screaming to myself to conserve, a huge depression is coming on. The other part of me wants to give in to the joy I have giving gifts this time of year. So I am trying to combine practical and cool together with giving fun gifts which don't break my bank.

Today we went window shopping. We bought stuff for us, not practical, but good. A new wine decanter. The shape is perfect for the new aerator I also got. Just the shape for dry red wine. Now I realize that doesn't seem practical, but it is....really.

I like wine. And my budget is smaller. So with a good decanter and a good aerator you can buy a cheaper bottle of wine, or if you have an older one that may have gotten the slightest bit of vinegar bite, taste better. And we got this stainless steel funnel that aerates and filters the wine at the same time. I have to tell you. It works wonderful. It adds so much life to your bottle.
The prices vary. So we looked around. The same decanter on line or at Younkers was listed at 80.oo, we found ours for 10.00. Sold. And the aerator funnel. We got them for 12. Makes your 10 dollar bottle of wine taste like a 20 dollar bottle of wine. So we bought some for gifts also as I know some wine lovers.

Then we kept looking around. I found a cool mini robot that I just know a smart kid in our family is going to love. And we found some lighted flowers that would look great in my vase but were way overpriced. So I am going to comparison shop for them.

Next stop was the Butcher. Meat is on sale right now so we bought bulk and had steaks made. Seriously, if you have the place to store them it is so much cheaper to do it this way and they make great gifts. And cookie dough. This place makes great cookie dough and you couldn't make them cheaper. But they taste home made. So I bought 4 assorted bags and will give them away as gifts. Cooked of course.

Then we decided. Might be a great time to make some wine. We can make 2 cases for what 2 good bottles cost you. And in a depression wine will be a commodity. Everyone will have to drown their sorrows...... right!

Anyway, Rick is grilling a great steak, I have some steamed asparagus and baby red potatoes cooking. And I am sipping on some great aerated wine. It really does work like it says it does.

The media can talk all they want to about Tiger Woods, anything to get your mind off the real and important issue in the world. Of course they don't want to talk about the Hoax that is Man made Global warming. Little tiny mean nothing issues are their headlines. But today I am taking a day off from useless media, tell nothing headlines and who gives a ....... news about a golfer. Today I am enjoying my husband, things I think I won't get many of in Obama's brave new world and the scent of the new baby I held today. Because the things that make me happy are small in the scheme of things, and like someone who realizes the days are numbered to enjoy them I am savoring each and every sip and bite. Because I guess finding another cancer spot on my face makes me appreciate each and every day. And because basically happiness it the most important thing. Ta all.

Goings on

Not much that is for sure. Friday we went to the comedy club. I was still sick, am still sick in fact, but I am glad they talked me into it as laughter is always so therapeutic. It was a great time. Then this weekend I have been cleaning and putting things away on my shelves so I can put out my Christmas decorations.

We have been debating whether or not to put up the tree. So much work for just the 2 of us. But I decided the two of us are worth it. And I have all these presents that are looking for a tree to sit under. So we will do it after all. I spent years collecting these Santa's. Can't keep them hidden in a tub in the basement.

Except for a couple of things my shopping is done. I ended up spending more then I had planned because my son added 3 peoples to the list with his girlfriend and kids. I really like them so its no problem. I hope and pray it lasts.

Today I have PT and sometime this week a doc appointment but for the life of me I can't remember when. Time to go through my purses and find that card. And then we are putting out Christmas decorations. I still have my sinus crud and if it doesn't get better soon I am going to get really whiny. Man it has been over a week. From what I hear though it has been lasting weeks for people. So the antibiotics didn't kick it out shorter. Bummer. I have to go get some type of ocean nasal spray someone recommended. I will try anything. Well almost anything.

Well, my wrists are killing me. My arthritis seems to be settling in on my wrists lately and typing is difficult. So enough for now. I finished my post a day for a month on my photo journal. Wow, finished something I started.

How could they hurt this poor animal

There are cruel people in this world we have no doubt. Maybe because I am a dog owner it makes it harder for me to see these poor animals abused. When I look at Zoey's warm brown eyes and the way she is always so happy to see you, so loyal a friend it makes it even harder to understand. So of course I donated to help. If you have a little extra this year won't you help Charlie. He needs it soon. Read his story here.

Allergies and Dust mites

I am still messing trying with this sinus infection trying to get it under control. The doc put me on antibiotics and zyrtec. Since I get this every year as soon as we close the house up he thinks it may be allergies. Maybe dust mite allergies. Yick.

Dust mites freak me out. They are so tiny you can't see them. They live by eating the skin you flake off your body. They live on your eyelids, your pillows, everyplace, millions and millions. And you get allergies breathing in their excretions. Feces. And then you got to think, maybe living on them is some type of mite that eats their flakes. And a mite that lives off their flakes. Infinate colonies of such minut particles that the most powerful microscope on earth couldn't see them. Every time I take a shower do they prepare for the tsunami? A ecosystem so fragile that all the bacteria soaps we are using has caused extinction of whole species. We will never know.

But I do know this. I have ordered pillows that are resistant to dust mites. I am sure in a world so vast and so full of skin flakes that killing off my few billion will not make a dent in the scheme of things. But maybe, just maybe I will finally get rid of this sinus infection and feel like a normal human being again. It will be a good thing.

Yesterday we ate at my son's. His girlfriend made a great dinner and we had some wines make in Iowa that were wonderful with the meal. Cranberry wine, yummy. I started out the day feeling totally crappy, I had chest pain off and on and am still just exhausted. Rick went into A-fib and he was feeling under the weather, what a pair we make. But after visiting and drinking some wine we both felt better. Family, friends and good times, the best medicine.

* 1 cup(s) fat-free half-and-half
* 1 cup(s) fat-free chicken broth
* 3 tablespoon(s) all-purpose flour
* 1 teaspoon(s) poultry seasoning
* 2 cup(s) roasted, skinless chicken breast, cut into bite-size pieces
* 1 package(s) (10-ounce) frozen mixed vegetables, thawed
* 4 scallions, cut into 1/4-inch-thick rounds
* 1 teaspoon(s) kosher salt
* 1/4 teaspoon(s) freshly ground pepper
* Cooking spray
* 1 can(s) (7.5 ounce) refrigerated country-style biscuits

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. In medium saucepan, whisk half-and-half, broth, flour, and poultry seasoning until combined. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer, whisking frequently, 4 minutes, or until thickened. Stir in chicken, mixed vegetables, scallions, salt, and pepper. Cover and keep warm.
2. Lightly coat 5 (6 oz) ramekins with cooking spray. On a lightly floured surface, overlap 2 biscuits and press edges together; roll biscuits into a 4-inch round (they don't have to be perfect). Roll out remaining biscuits the same way. Fill ramekins with chicken mixture. Top each with biscuit dough, pressing dough onto side of ramekin to adhere; cut a 1/2-inch-round vent hole in middle of dough.
3. Bake 12 minutes, or until biscuits are golden and filling bubbly. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

This is just in time for after your dinner last night, what to do with the leftover turkey, well you can use it in this dish. The calories have been cut in half in this recipe which is a good thing.
